SWEET ORANGE (CITRUS SINENSIS)

Origin and Characteristics

Citrus trees is the common name given to fruit trees producing acidic fruits. The term “citrus” refers to the botanical genus Citrus, which belongs to the Rutaceae family. Their fruit is high in vitamin C and citric acid. They originate from tropical and subtropical Asia.

Citrus trees are small trees or shrubs, reaching heights of 5 to 8 m. In cultivation, pruning is recommended to prevent excessive height and allow easier fruit harvesting. Some species are thorny. They have dense foliage and evergreen leaves. These are long-lived trees but sensitive to low temperatures below -4°C.

Flowering occurs in spring (April–May) and also in autumn, the latter being more fragrant than the spring bloom. Essential oils are obtained from all parts of the plant (branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds), but they are mainly cultivated for their fruit.

Fruits ripen from November onwards, and some fruits, like lemons, can remain on the tree for a long time without spoiling.

Decoration – Outdoors or Indoors?

Sweet orange trees are best planted in gardens or orchards, where they can grow quite tall. It is recommended to prune before flowering to encourage new shoots and limit height, making fruit harvesting easier. An ideal height is around 3 m.

If planted indoors, they should be placed in very bright areas. In pots, they remain smaller and grow less.

Care

·         Needs plenty of water and light; must be placed in well-lit areas. Tolerates temperatures down to -4°C. If frost below that temperature is expected, cover with a tarp.

·         Prune before spring to remove dry branches and encourage stronger new growth.

·         Fertilize with nitrogen-, phosphorus-, and potassium-rich fertilizers; worm humus is also beneficial. Apply in spring, summer, and autumn.

·         Water abundantly — in winter every three days, in summer more frequently.

Ensure excellent drainage, both in the ground and in pots
